Demographics of Arthroscopic Elbow Surgery

November 2015 study released by University of California cites orthopedic trends in regard to elbow arthroscopy surgery procedures.
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy is “a procedure that orthopedic surgeons use to inspect, diagnose, and repair problems inside a joint.”
The study examines the demographics of elbow arthroscopy procedures from 2007-2011:
- Males accounted for 71% of procedures
- 22% of patients were aged younger than 20 years
- 25% were aged 20 to 39 years,
- 47% were aged 40 to 59 years
- 6% were aged 60 years or older.

Luckily, for the vast majority of varsity and recreational athletes living on Long Island, NY- most elbow problems addressed by orthopedic surgeon Robert Moriarty MD do not require surgery. Most injuries can be assessed and treated by activity modification, icing, strengthening, and physical therapy.
