Summer is here; which means sun, sand and of course, swimming. Swimming is a great way to get exercise and cool off during the hot summer months and can even be great for the musculoskeletal conditions. However, swimming and diving can also lead to orthopedic injury–many of which can be prevented .

In fact, Dr. Robert V. Moriarty, M.D., an orthopedist based in Long Island, NY sees many of these cases in his practice during the summer months. Here are safety tips before you splash into summer.

Quick Tips for Swimming and Diving Safety:

  • Make sure unattended pools are safely closed and monitored when children are around
  • Be very vigilant with small children around any body of water
  • Never dive into shallow water. Inspect the depth of the water before you dive to avoid orthopedic injury:  Over 1,800 spinal cord injuries occur each year–the majority of these result in catastrophic injury: paralysis of all four limbs
  • When diving from a high point, make sure that the distance to the bottom of the body of water is at least double the distance of  the point where you’re diving from
  • Never dive into water that is not clear
  • Never dive into above ground pools
  • Only one person should be on the diving board at a time. After you jump, swim away from the diving board to make room for the next diver
